Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

I first saw Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco at the book store and it seemed interesting. However, I thought that it didn’t really scream out to me despite the beautiful cover art and didn’t pick it up. After seeing it constantly popping up on Instagram and then in my recommended books, I finally decided to order a copy of Stalking Jack the Ripper. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed.

Plot

Audrey Rose Wadsworth, 17 year old daughter of a lord, has a life luxury ahead of her. However, when she’s not attending teas or being fitted for a new dress, Audrey lives a forbidden life.

Sneaking off to her uncle’s laboratory, Audrey Rose apprentices forensic medicine against her father’s and society’s rules. When a brutal murder leads to a series of corpses, Audrey Rose’s forensic work entangles her in the investigation of a serial killer. In her search, Audrey Rose finds answers close to her own shielded world.

Review

Alright, I didn’t know if I’d like Stalking Jack the Ripper since it’s not fantasy, but historical fiction. With that being said, the story isn’t accurate to the historical events involving Jack the Ripper. There are clear creative and literary liberties taken for everything to make sense in this fictitious story. At the end Kerri Maniscalco included an author’s note to discuss these liberties and the facts used. I saw many reviews saying that the story wasn’t accurate to the historical events, and that’s because it wasn’t intended to be 100% accurate. If I wanted everything to be precise, I’d pick up a history book about Jack the Ripper. I digress.

Now the characters. Audrey Rose Wadsworth is endlessly curious about death, forensic science and medicine, and not conforming to society’s expectations for women. Therefore I love her. Audrey Rose is not a typical high born lady, however she does enjoy being girly and the luxurious items money can buy. Science is her passion and she refuses to let anything get in her way of pursuing her dreams. Even though Audrey Rose is a woman of science, witty, and able to set aside her emotions while doing her work, she still has compassion and is unwilling to become a robot.

Thomas Cresswell. Honestly, I feel like I don’t need to go further than that. However if you’ve never read Stalking Jack the Ripper then you won’t understand. I officially have a new literary crush. This man is intriguing, charming, intelligent, sarcastic, witty, and Thomas can be a bit impolite at times. Why do I always fall in love with these types of characters? Because I enjoy charming smart asses that can be a little socially awkward at times.

I just ordered the other 3 books in this series, I’m hooked.
